Legacy Authors & Acknowledgements

OpenSWMM builds on the foundational work of the EPA Storm Water Management Model (SWMM), originally developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The contributions of the following individuals were instrumental in creating the SWMM platform from which OpenSWMM evolved:

  • Lewis A. Rossman, Ph.D. — Primary developer and author of SWMM 5.x and its original user, application, and reference manuals. Environmental Scientist Emeritus, U.S. EPA, Office of Research and Development, National Risk Management Research Laboratory.
  • Wayne C. Huber, Ph.D. — Co-developer of the original SWMM (1971) and author of early documentation. Oregon State University.
  • Larry A. Roesner, Ph.D. — Contributor to early SWMM development. Colorado State University.
  • Robert E. Dickinson — Contributor to SWMM 5 review and testing. Innovyze.

The original SWMM software was developed by the Water Supply and Water Resources Division of the U.S. EPA's National Risk Management Research Laboratory, Cincinnati, OH 45268. SWMM 5 was a complete rewrite funded by U.S. EPA under Contract No. EP-C-04-062. The original source code was released into the Public Domain.
